Tactical RPG Idea

Post by Pictor »

I dunno where else it would be appropriate to post this, but seeing as how this is the most relevant forum we have around, I'm gonna throw this here.

So I've been thinking about a tactical/ strategy RPG based very loosely on Lamentable Nights. By 'loosely', I mean that at most characters and some fundamental concepts would be borrowed (or make 'cameos'). Everything else would be entirely original. I'm just doing this out of the sheer necessity to keep my mind from frying, while keeping the semblence that I'm doing something productive.

You guys don't have to participate. I'm just hoping that this thread can bring a smidgen of joy and entertainment to your day.

Dread Drastic - The Lamentable Nights

Basic Premise:

There exists two worlds; the world of the humans and the world of the phantasmals. These worlds exist in tandem with each other, but are perpetually separated by thin veil of reality. So close together, yet so far apart; like the horizon and its mirrored image, reflected upon a glassy lake.

The game involves an original 'protagonist' character of selectable gender. They fall asleep one night and end up in a bizarre world called the Crossed Space, which is a twisted fusion of their hometown and the world of the phantasmals; supernatural creatures based on tales and folklore. While the Crossed Space resembles the protagonist's hometown, the geology is bizarre and warped, all of its regular denizens are gone, and the streets are overrun with monstrous creatures called Blights who viciously attack anyone on sight.

The beginning of the game focuses on the protagonist taking short romps through the Crossed Space before they inexplicably 'reawaken' in the real human world. Each night, however, they inevitably arrive back in the Crossed Space, where they must struggle against its many dangers to survive. The protagonist also comes to meet others that have become unwitting guests of the Crossed Space, which include both humans and phantasmal beings alike. A growing group of characters, lead by the protagonist, slowly discovers the secrets behind the unsettling phenomenon they find themselves a part of, including the fact that each subsequent 'trip' seems to last longer and longer. Who knows how long they have before they become permanently trapped forever?

An on-going list.

Playable Characters

-Humans-
  • Protagonist: The main character. Their gender and name are decided by the player. A rather quiet, but strong and reliable youth from a small town. They find themselves a victim of the mysterious Crossed Space, being dragged into its dangerous world each night, and strives to find a way out before the stay becomes a permanent ordeal. In battle, the Protagonist boasts a balance between offensive and defensive abilities, but can choose to specialize as he or she chooses.
    (Original character)
  • Mirto: A studious girl from the same school as the protagonist, although they don't really become acquainted until after they discover each other in the Crossed Space. Has a rather serious and no-nonsense personality, but seems to cope with tough circumstances surprisingly well. Specializes in defensive abilities.
(Based on Mirto from Lamentable Nights RP)
  • Martin Chang: A foul-mouthed man who is a Go instructor at the local community centre. As an older member of the group, he feels the need to ensure the safety of the kids. Can be bumbling at times, but has a strong sense of responsibility. Specializes in clairvoyant abilities that reveal and exploit enemy weaknesses.
(Based on Martin from Lamentable Nights RP)
  • Sanae Fujiwara: A shy and overly courteous woman who comes from a line of skilled spirit mediums and exorcists. As such, she has an extensive knowledge and understanding of many things supernatural. Unlike the other characters, she actually detected the unsettling presence of the Crossed Space and entered it on her own volition, but in the end she's ultimately just as clueless about its nature as everyone else. Specializes in healing and supportive abilities.
(Based on Sanae from Lamentable Nights RP)
  • Lanette: A hyperactive girl who dresses and acts like a superhero in an action flick while claiming to be an ally of justice. Whether or not she really believes she is one... is up in the air. It seems that she's chasing an elusive 'archvillain' of hers who seems to be responsible for untold amounts of miscellaneous evil. Lanette's sanity is debatable, but she boasts an incredible fighting strength and seems eager to do good. Specializes in brute force combat.
(Based on Lanette from Lamentable Nights RP)
-Phantasmals-
  • M: A Shade who takes on the appearance of a young man. His full name is Mad Hooder, presumably based on the clothes that he wears, but insists on a single-letter abbreviation of the label. He acts sarcastic and cynical and derives a mischievous joy from teasing other people. In reality, he's actually a bit of a coward who prefers flight over fight. In battle, M conjures shadows to deceive and disorient foes.
(Based on M from Lamentable Nights RP)
  • Oriole: A Fire Elemental in the form of a young girl with long hair that flows as if it were made of flames. Honest, innocent, and a bit slow in terms of processing things. Prone to dozing off if she gets too bored. She may have an unexpectedly frightening hidden side if she gets angry enough. In combat, Oriole specializes in long-range bombardment and offensive, area-of-effect spells.
(Based on Oriole from Lamentable Nights RP)
  • Threads: A Poltergeist who appears as a bundle of clothing in human form. Due to the influence of another being named Lucifer, he initially believes that the entirety of the Crossed Space is nothing but an illusory farce, including the people inside of it. He is by no means a bad person, but his stoic and calculating personality might come off to some people as being cold. As a Poltergeist, Threads has a unique ability which allows him to perform different skills depending on the items he equips, allowing him to literally dress for any occasion.
(Based on Threads from Lamentable Nights RP)
  • Cassius: A Cu Sith in the form of a young man with dog-like ears. Although Cu Sith are usually green furred, Cassius has gone to great lengths to dye his hair blonde in order to appear less unusual, and is extremely happy and proud of the outcome. Despite being the human equivalent of a young adult, he has a rather childish personality and is often shocked or amazed at simple concepts. Likewise, it doesn't take much to make him happy or depressed. However, when it comes to fighting, Cassius is a deft and efficient gunslinger specializing in dual pistols. Along with his partner Graciel, he is one of the few phantasmals who are capable of handling modern human weaponry.
(Based on Cassius from Lamentable Nights RP)
  • Graciel: A Cait Sith who appears as a young man with cat-like ears. In contrast to his partner and friend Cassius, Graciel is much more mature and collected. He speaks and acts in a very polite manner, and never seems to get angry or otherwise upset. Apparently, back in the phantasmal world, he is very popular with the ladies and has an all female fan club who stalks him constantly (which he, very respectfully, admits can sometimes be a problem). Graciel is an accurate sharpshooter who excels in extra long-range combat with his sniper rifle. Along with his partner Cassius, he is one of the few phantasmals capable of handling modern human weaponry.
(Based on Graciel from Lamentable Nights RP)
  • ???: A mysterious, masked figure that the protagonist encounters sporadically throughout the Crossed Space. His methods and motives are as elusive as his nature, although he always seems to be around whenever something major happens. One thing is for sure; he is quite strong. However, the question remains... is he friend or foe?
(Based on Jacket from Lamentable Nights RP)
-Non-Player Characters-
  • REDMIST: A strange human man who seems to know a great deal of information about the Crossed Space. He never speaks to anyone face-to-face, and instead communicates through a remote-controlled flying robot, as well as a series of camera terminals relayed throughout the corrupted version of the town. He contacts the player shortly after their first trip into the Crossed Space, guiding them to safety while providing them with vital survival tactics. As the game progresses, he also offers to keep track of the player's records and combat data, allowing the player to relive battles they've experienced through virtual simulators.
(Based on Z. Redmist from Lamentable Nights RP)
  • Lady Hailey: A female phantasmal with black wings who seems to be in an eternally sour mood. Apparently she's a Fallen Angel, although most people joke around and call her a crow due to her sadistic attitude. Runs a small bar in the Crossed Spaced called 'The Loaded Gallows' which acts as a sort of safe haven for people who've managed to get themselves trapped in the cursed world. It is also a gathering place those who wish to trade for goods salvaged from the Crossed Space. Hailey herself has the power to boost stats and promote abilities for the Protagonist's party in exchange for a valuable substance called Etherite, which is left behind by those who've fallen while in the Crossed Space. REDMIST has a terminal set up in Hailey's bar, and they seem to be well acquainted with each other, though REDMIST regards the relationship as less than pleasant. Hailey seems to enjoy tormenting the poor recluse though, even if it's just over an intercom.
(Based on Hailey from Lamentable Nights RP)
-Pending Characters-
  • Kaitou: A boy who attends a different school in town. Seems to have some problems of his own. Wields a utility knife, and has the ability to absorb energy from the attacks of foes.
  • Lee: A friend of Kaitou's. Tries to act steady and level-headed, but can easily be pushed over the edge by the stupidity of others. Attacks by using an arsenal of cheap imitation weapons.
  • Victor: Another friend of Kaitou's. Hot-headed and excitable. Swings around a traffic sign as a weapon.
  • Avarice: A street-smart delinquent who uses a fake name. Instead of being concerned with the situation, he's actually having a blast running around the inside of the Crossed Space. His weapon is a skateboard.
  • Vessa: A Vampire that comes from a wealthy family. Has the personality of a spoiled princess, but quickly becomes flustered when teased. Wields an ornate rapier as a weapon and can command hordes of bat familiars to attack.
  • Glant: A Dullahan who is bursting with knightly honor. He strives for the thrill of glorious battle and the romance of adventure. A bit sensitive about his lack of a head, though. Wields a large lance capable of shattering the earth upon impact.
  • Waner: A Werewolf who tries to look tough and act even tougher. Wears sunglasses, even though he's primarily a nocturnal creature. His devastating weakness is anyone calling him out on doing anything uncool. Possesses razor sharp claws and teeth that generate electric shocks.
  • Seven: A malevolent Vengeful Spirit who loves to play tricks on people and see them squeal. Nothing makes her happier than manipulating a bunch of saps, and having them completely fall for it. But maybe she's actually just a bit desperate for attention. Attacks by lashing out her draping sleeves, which extend at her will and freezes anything they touch by draining the heat from the surrounding air.
